In conversation with Ellen Yiu

Students considering a future in art will have taken much away from Mr Peachey’s lunchtime discussion with Ellen Yiu (2016) on Thursday 2 March.

Ellen, who will be exhibiting her work in the Netherlands and Venice in the near future, talked about making unconventional choices and searching for her path. Ellen did Art Foundation at Paris College of Art, followed by a Bachelor in Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, Netherlands, and a Arts, Media & Society double degree certificate at Leiden University, Netherlands.

She was keen to share that Fine Arts education is highly individualised and involves not only studio practise, but also critical thinking and problem solving. It can be multidisciplinary and encourages the mindset of learning to differentiate and to connect. Art schools are the beginning of an artist’s career, many continue with a Master’s degree or with art residencies.

Ellen’s response to Mr Peachey’s question about what students can do now to prepare for a future career in art was to explore as much art as possible, such as visiting museums and galleries, and to continue to make things that they enjoy.
